Stiquare

Welcome to the modern "Dots and Boxes" game!

Pitch

Stiquare is a multiplayer turn-based puzzle game where the objective is to fill the higher number of squares. The gameplay is inspired by the classic pen-and-paper game 'Dots and Boxes,' where players aim to complete the fourth side of a square by connecting dots.

By filling the square, players claim a point, adding a strategic twist to the game. But with Stiquare, we spice things up by adding special powers to make it more strategic and exciting.

Project identity :

Project name : Stiquare

Discipline : Game Design

Project type : Personnal project

Project status : On hiatus

Project Timeline : December 2020

Gameplay

The gaming experience is centered around strategic thinking and quick decision-making.

Players take turns selecting a line in the grid, aiming to complete the fourth side of a square. Victory is achieved by filling more squares than opponents. The game provides a delicate balance of stress and satisfaction, where each move matters.

A unique feature involves a charging gauge, replenished at the end of each turn. This gauge, initially full, adds a layer of strategy. Efficient use of the gauge can impact the game's outcome.

Mechanics

The player can :

  • Select a line

  • Use his special ability

Bonus Points:

Adding some strategic thinking, completing a square with all lines having the exact same color awards the player an additional point. This adds a meaning to the color other than just identifying the player with strategic color choices and can introduce an element of surprise to each match.

Special abilities

Stiquare introduces a diverse set of special abilities, adding depth and uniqueness to each player's experience. At the start of the game, players choose a character, each equipped with distinct powers. Here are some of those abilities:

  1. Invisible line:

    • Online mode only

    • Renders the last line invisible to opponents. If selected, opponents lose their turn. A strategic move to outwit online adversaries.

  2. Chaos Catalyst:

    • Introduces a percentage chance that, in the next round, selected traits for opponents will be randomized. Adds an unpredictable twist to the game for one round.

  3. Trait Lock:

    • Locks a trait, preventing any player from selecting it for a set number of turns. An effective way to control the availability of key traits.

Customization and Strategy: The selection of abilities is a strategic decision. Abilities may vary in strength, impacting the maximum charge of the gauge. This element adds an extra layer of tactical depth to each match.

State of the project

As of now, the Stiquare project is temporarily on hiatus. The conceptualization and design phase have been completed, outlining a turn-based puzzle game with strategic twists. Plans are in place to continue the journey using Godot as the game engine.

Though on hiatus, the Stiquare project is far from forgotten. Keep an eye out for updates, and thank you for your continued interest!

The game's journey is far from over!
